A situation of uncertainty, immense stress and feelings of hopelessness makes individuals deeply disturbed during war like situations. History has proven that post-traumatic stress disorder, depression and anxiety are more likely in people who live in armed conflict zones or those who witness it. From the individuals to their families, generations get impacted due to the threat of war. There is loss of livelihood, identity crisis, and several diseases that impact humans during a war like situation. With emergency like situations, there is a feeling of disconnect with people as communication lines can get impacted.
The recent conflict between India and Pakistan caused immense stress to the people who were at war and to their families. The common masses also got impacted considering the uncertainty of situation. Children had to deal with anxiety since schools were shut at few places.
‘I belong to the state of Jammu and Kashmir, a land known for its beauty but often caught in the crossfire of unrest. Recently, tensions escalated into a war-like situation, with reports of missiles and drones being sent across the border by Pakistan.
The atmosphere was heavy with fear and uncertainty. Sirens, the sound of distant explosions, and the sight of military presence became a grim part of daily life. Having grown up in a household of discipline and duty, - my father being a retired IPS officer – the situation hit even close to home. I was reminded of the sacrifices our forces make every day, and the constant weight carried by families who had served and continue to serve the nation. The entire situation was indeed a time of resilience, anxiety and a deep yearning of peace,’ says Dr Anima Puri, Assistant Professor, who hails from Jammu and Kashmir, currently based in Delhi.
The Israel-Gaza conflict has also impacted several families. Especially children are at the receiving end of war. Women, men and old people are suffering immensely due to the war. With so many deaths that are happening, livelihoods being lost, there is an urgency like situation in the entire world. Leaders need to prioritise humanity over arms. Right to life is being violated at every incident. Dialogues need to be prioritised over weapons. One should not forget that each life lost is a loss for several generations and its impact can be disastrous for many lives.
