In a letter to the Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan on March 7, Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma had said, “and as most of the colleges in the state are affiliated to the North Eastern Hill University, I request your good office to kindly exempt the state of Meghalaya from conducting the CUET.”

“The state of Meghalaya has recently undergone a Legislative Assembly election, the results of which have been declared last week. This has resulted in the delay of State Board examination and in this regard, students are facing unprecedented challenges to attempt the CUET for the state-level undergraduate institutions,” he said.

The chief minister had also informed that the government has also taken steps to create a State University. “We will soon be receiving the approval of the Governor of Meghalaya.”

In May, last year, the union education minister had agreed to exempt Meghalaya from conducting the CUET based on the request made by the chief minister.

Shillong, March 6: United Democratic Party (UDP) general secretary Jemino Mawthoh today urged the state government to seek the Prime Minister’s intervention for the extension of the exemption of the CUET-UG for one more academic year (2023-2024).

“Hence, I would like to request the Chief Minister to implore the Prime Minister to kindly extend the Exemption of the CUET-UG for one more academic year (2023-2024),” Mawthoh said in a statement here.

He said the CUET-UG (Common University Entrance Test for Undergraduates) has been implemented as an Admission test affiliated with colleges of central universities since 2022.

Meghalaya and other NE States were exempted from the purview of The CUET-UG last year. For admission in this academic year (2023-24), CUET-UG will be implemented by the affiliating university (NEHU) for all its colleges.

The students of Meghalaya (especially) students from the rural areas are either unaware of the exams or find it extremely difficult to register and prepare for the CUET-UG, he said.

The last date for CUET UG is March 12, 2023.
