Shillong, July 4: The Meghalaya government has notified various locations across Shillong city as on-street parking and no-parking zones, with fixed parking rates to be effective from August 1.
This is part of a broader strategy to decongest the city and manage parking demand.
The policy will be implemented across zones including Sadar, Madanrting, Laban, Mawlai, Rynjah, Lumdiengjri, and Laitumkhrah. This follows the notification of the Meghalaya Parking Policy for Urban Areas, 2025 by the Urban Affairs Department.
A government notification issued on June 26 stated that parking charges will be Rupees 20 per hour for two-wheelers and Rupees 40 per hour for four-wheelers in high-demand (commercial) zones. In low-demand (non-commercial) zones, rates will be Rupees 15 and Rupees 30, respectively.
Seven zonal task forces, headed by Additional District Magistrates, have been formed to manage the process, in collaboration with the Public Works Department and dorbar shnongs.
The department plans to use the period until August 1 to finalise the modalities of fee collection and revenue sharing.
“Any unauthorised fee collection or deviation from notified rates will be penalised,” the notification stated.
Integration of digital payment solutions is also being explored in partnership with GiZ. This arrangement will remain in effect until further orders.
