Shillong, April 30: The Pt. Deen Dayal Upadhyay Community College and Skill Development Centre, Wahiajer a constituent College of the North-Eastern Hill University (NEHU) under the Principal-ship of Prof. S.M. Sungoh successfully organized a seven-day skill up-gradation training programme on “BAKERY” with an objective to engage the youths of the community with the essential vocational skills for their economic independence and sustainable livelihood.
During the seven-day sessions, 60 participants representing the diverse groups of the community were provided training through practical demonstration and interactive sessions by the invited Resource Persons. The participants gained valuable insights and knowledge in the essential skills related with bakery trade and its establishment.
The seven-day programme successfully concluded with a valedictory function organized on April 30, 2025 with the august presence of Alfred Kharbani, Audit Officer (Retd), Govt. of Meghalaya who had kindly consented to grace the function as the Chief Guest along-with the kind presence of Latu Nartiang, Branch Manager, Meghalaya Co-op. Apex Bank Ltd. Ummulong Branch as the Guest of Honour along with Sanwotki Laloo, Headman of Wahiajer Village.
In their respective speeches, they underscored the significance of acquiring the essentials skills of Bakery and encouraged the participants and local youths while respecting the value of time to focus on the knowledge acquired through the training programme to enhance their skills in the area of the Bakery trade, as it had established itself as one of skilled-based specialized profession which had generated a lot of interest and passion especially amongst the youths in the region and the entire state of Meghalaya.
They also stated that such training programme on this aspect is essential to ensure the impact on the livelihood of the members of the community with an understanding that awareness of financial support through banks and the health and safety of the consumers is of paramount importance when pursuing food-based trade activities.
Others who spoke also include Dr. F. R. Sumer, Librarian, NEHU, who was overwhelmed with the passion and commitment of the youths of the community in engaging themselves in such basic skill training programme as they prepare themselves to become skilled in Bakery.
He encourage the participants to pursue further using the skills acquired through the training programme and to adopt latest technology realizing that Bakery is a skilled-based profession that youths will gain advantage of due to the sustainable opportunities that emerge in the growing market of food industry.
This initiative is part of DDUCC’s/NEHU’s broader commitment in promoting vocational education and skill development, as part of NEP 2020 and in line with the vision of (L) Pandit Deen Dayal Upadhyay. The successful programmes led the College to have received positive feedback and support from the public especially in the aspect of equipping the community with the skills through the various trades offered by the College from time to time.
The event was concluded with distribution of certificates and vote of thanks proposed by Shri. Wolnish Rymbai, College Programme Coordinator, DDUCC.
