Shillong, March 28: Over 903 SSA schools are having an enrolment of fewer than 20 students each, Minister-in-charge of Education Rakkam A Sangma informed the Assembly.

There are also 45 lower primary schools which have a single-digit enrolment of students while 62 schools are with zero enrolments, Sangma said while replying to a supplementary query raised by opposition Congress MLA from Mawhati Charles Marngar,

Stating that the process of rationalization is going on, the minister said in respect to the vacancies in the government lower primary schools, the process for recruiting teachers has been delayed due to the court order for roster system implementation.

“However, the department is on the job and proper recruitment will happen immediately,” he said.

Sangma further informed that the state government has decided to send temporary teachers to over 1002 lower primary schools. Temporary teachers have already been engaged for government secondary and higher secondary schools.

There are over 1,219 vacant teacher posts in government schools of which 1002 are in lower primary, 41 are upper primary, 125 are secondary and 51 are higher secondary – while there are 420 vacant teacher posts in SSA schools of which 102 are in lower primary, 292 are upper primary and 26 secondary schools.
