Shillong, July 4: The National People's Party is preparing for a strong performance in the upcoming Garo Hills Autonomous District Council elections, with party leader and cabinet minister Rakkam A Sangma expressing confidence in securing an absolute majority.
Speaking to media persons today, Sangma ruled out pre-poll alliances with other parties, stating that the NPP will work hard to achieve a majority on its own.
“Politics always has its dynamics, and we expect a different outcome. It is not easy for anybody. We are on the job and not taking any chances,” he said, when asked about the opposition’s preparations.
Sangma said the party will focus on showcasing achievements in sectors such as road connectivity, health, education, sports, and agriculture. He urged voters to assess the government's work based on visible improvements in infrastructure and institutions.
Sangma revealed that over 100 candidates have expressed interest in contesting under the NPP banner. He dismissed suggestions of a potential defeat, citing the party's hard work.
On GHADC polls to be a semi-final for the 2028 Assembly elections, Sangma said outcomes vary by election, referencing the contrasting results of the recent Lok Sabha and Gambegre by-polls.
