Shillong: The District Magistrate, East Khasi Hills District has promulgated an Order under Section 163 BNSS prohibiting the illegal killing of fishes and environmental degradation in the Umiam River falling within the boundary of Umlyngka village from Sdad Wah Umkhrah to Sdad Jlu cause through poisonous chemicals & explosive substances including bleaching powder, ammonium-sulphate, pesticides, dynamite, fishing nets etc by any persons.

This Order is necessitated following reports that miscreants are rampantly killing fishes along Umiam River within the boundary of Umlyngka village and the adjoining areas through haphazard use of poisonous chemicals & explosive substances including bleaching powder, ammonium-sulphate, pesticides, dynamite, fishing nets etc that can cause irreversible damage to the river and endanger the aquatic lives therein unless prevented.

Any violation to this Order shall be prosecuted under Section 223 of the BNS.

This order comes into force with immediate effect and remains in force till further orders.
