New Delhi: India and France have officially signed a significant defence agreement for the acquisition of Rafale Marine fighter jets, aiming to strengthen India's naval capabilities and bolster maritime security.
The deal was signed between senior officials from both nations during a ceremony held in New Delhi. It marks a major step forward in the strategic defence partnership between India and France.
Under the agreement, India will procure 26 Rafale Marine jets designed for operations from aircraft carriers. These advanced fighter jets will enhance the Indian Navy’s air power, particularly as India expands its maritime reach in the Indo-Pacific region.
Negotiations for the deal had been ongoing for several months, following the Indian Navy's recommendation to purchase the Rafale Marine variant after evaluating multiple options.
Officials noted that the introduction of these jets would significantly boost India's ability to secure its maritime interests, especially amidst evolving security challenges.
India and France, long-standing defence partners, continue to deepen cooperation across sectors ranging from aerospace to naval technologies. This latest deal is seen as a reflection of their shared commitment to strengthening regional and global security.
The Rafale Marine jets are expected to be stationed aboard India's new aircraft carrier, INS Vikrant, enhancing its operational readiness.
