New Delhi: The Indian government has blocked 16 YouTube channels based in Pakistan, accusing them of circulating provocative content and misinformation targeting Indian audiences.
According to officials, these channels were spreading false narratives that could harm public order and national security. The action was taken under the provisions of the Information Technology Act.
The Ministry of Information and Broadcasting stated that the blocked channels were engaged in coordinated disinformation campaigns, particularly following the recent terror attack in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir.
In a related move, the Centre has also formally raised objections with the BBC over its reporting on the Pahalgam attack, alleging that the coverage was biased and portrayed India in a negative light.
The government emphasized that media organizations must adhere to responsible journalism, especially when reporting on sensitive national security matters. Officials have reiterated their commitment to countering misinformation, whether it originates domestically or from foreign platforms.
India has intensified efforts over the past few years to crack down on fake news and propaganda spread through social media and online platforms, especially from sources linked to hostile entities.
