Shillong, July 4: The Hynniewtrep Youth Council (HYC) has demanded strict action against illegal transportation of animals into Meghalaya.
In a petition submitted to the Director of Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Department today, HYC President Roykupar Synrem urged the department to enforce transportation laws and Standard Operating Procedures.
He stated that on June 30, HYC members intercepted a mini-truck (AS 01 RC 7779) at the Anti-Infiltration Check-gate in Byrnihat, Ri Bhoi District. The truck, operated by a courier company, was transporting nine cattle in congested conditions and without required documents.
The animals also lacked certification confirming fitness for human consumption.
Synrem noted that the transportation violated the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act, 1960; the Transport of Animals Rules, 1978 (as amended); and the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988.
“We fail to understand how such transportation is allowed without following legal procedures,” he said, emphasising the need for strict enforcement.
