Nongpoh, May 22: The Dorbar Pyllun (General Body) of Erpakon village, consisting of both youths and elders, reached a unanimous decision on Tuesday in response to the recent murder of a local resident by a non-tribal labourer where they have resolved to evict all non-tribals residing or working within the village's jurisdiction. This decision comes in the wake of the brutal murder of 38-year-old Kyrmen Lyngdoh Nonglait, a local, by a non-tribal laborer employed at the RN Sharma Hotel.
Nonglait met a tragic end on the evening of May 11, 2024. The incident occurred around 7:30 pm, with his body discovered shortly after, around 8:00 pm, on a village road. Following the filing of an FIR by the victim's wife, Kismilin Snaitang, Raju Rajbhar, a 42-year-old non-tribal laborer, was promptly arrested by the police on May 12. Rajbhar confessed to the crime, admitting to attacking Nonglait with a wooden log during a drunken altercation, which resulted in fatal injuries.
In response to this disturbing event, the Dorbar Pyllun of Erpakon has decided to implement stringent measures against the RN Sharma Hotel. All non-tribal workers employed at the hotel must vacate the village within a month. Additionally, it has been decreed that the hotel should be operated solely by indigenous tribals henceforth, with RN Sharma required to vacate the premises within the same timeframe to facilitate this transition.
M. Thongni, the headman of Erpakon, along with Lambor Kharshilot, the General Secretary, expressed that these decisions are aimed at preventing further incidents of violence and ensuring the security of the village's tribal population. Furthermore, the Dorbar Pyllun has resolved not to issue any no-objection certificates for non-tribals intending to operate businesses within the village's jurisdiction from this point forward. This resolute stance from the village leadership underscores their commitment to safeguarding their community from similar future occurrences.
