Shillong, Oct 1: The North-Eastern Hill University (NEHU) witnessed a remarkable display of community spirit and environmental consciousness as it organized "Swachta Divas – EK Tarrekh Ek Ghanta" an initiative aimed at promoting cleanliness and environmental sustainability today.

This event brought together more than 300 enthusiastic students and teachers, who actively participated in a one-hour cleanliness drive through "Shramdaan" (voluntary labor) program.

The event was graced by the presence of Prof. Prabha Shankar Shukla, the Vice-Chancellor of NEHU, and Prof SR Joshi, the Registrar of the university, who led by example by actively participating in the cleanliness drive within and outside the campus. The infectious enthusiasm and dedication of the NEHU fraternity towards this noble cause were palpable throughout the event.

In his insightful address, Prof Prabha Shankar Shukla, the Vice-Chancellor of NEHU, emphasized the importance of cleanliness and its profound impact on the environment.

He highlighted that "Swachta Divas" should not merely be a one-day event but rather a year-long commitment to keeping our surroundings clean and preserving the natural beauty of our region.

Prof Shukla further drew inspiration from Mahatma Gandhi, who consistently championed the cause of cleanliness and the preservation of nature.

"Mahatma Gandhi's teachings and ideals continue to resonate with us today," said Prof Shukla.

"His emphasis on cleanliness and the harmonious relationship between humanity and nature serves as a guiding light for us all. It is our responsibility to follow in his footsteps and work towards a cleaner and greener future."
