Shillong, Aug 30: Opposition AITC state president Charles Pyngrope today condemned the recent violent incident during a public hearing at Thangskai village in East Jaintia Hills.

“Nothing can be solved through violence but only through dialogues because a confrontational attitude doesn’t work in a civilized society,” Pyngrope told reporters.

The Nongthymmai legislator said that police should have exercise restraint and not use force on women and people.

“Such incidents should not take place in the future. I really condemned the incident irrespective of why they were there in the first place,” he added.

He also urged the State government to be more proactive and anticipate the situation that may arise to prevent any law and order situation.

Meanwhile, Pyngrope also urged the State government to take steps to ensure there is no illegal encroachment from Assam.

On Deputy CM Sniawbhalang Dhar’s claim that Lapangap is well within Meghalaya and not an area of dispute, the AITC leader said, “I am not familiar with that area and honestly I have not been there but the very fact that it belongs to the territory of Meghalaya, means some steps have to be taken to make sure that the encroachment does stop as illegal encroachment means you are going against the law. It is legally not allowed. So therefore, our government should take steps to ensure these things do not happen.”

Shillong, Aug 30: Opposition All India Trinamool Congress (AITC) today demanded that the implementation of the new National Education Policy (NEP), 2020 should be withheld in the State of Meghalaya.

Speaking to reporters, AITC state president Charles Pyngrope said that rethink has to be done on the NEP otherwise it will be detrimental to the future of the students.

“Yesterday, I spoke to one of the former principals of the St Edmunds College and he said you have to have experts to discuss this. This will affect the academic career of the students. Rethink has to be done on this policy and experts should be put (in place),” he said.

“And I believe that the government of Meghalaya has got a state education commission and there are some good people. They should give ideas, and opinions. Till that time it (NEP) should be withheld,” the Nongthymmai legislator added.

Shillong, Aug 30: Opposition All India Trinamool Congress (AITC) is likely to field former Umroi legislator George B Lyngdoh as its candidate for the Shillong parliamentary seat in the upcoming Lok Sabha polls to be held next year.

Speaking to media persons today, AITC state president Charles Pyngrope informed that his party has decided to contest from both Shillong and Tura parliamentary seats.

“For Shillong region, it is my personal opinion but it will depend on the entire party’s hierarchy, I feel George Lyngdoh will be a very good candidate,” said Pyngrope, who is the lone AITC legislator from Khasi-Jaintia Hills region.

He however added, “From Garo Hills, I leave it to the wisdom of the parliamentary party leader Dr Mukul Sangma to take the final call.”

Stating that he is yet to discuss the matter with the party high command, the Nongthymmai legislator said, “In fact I had spoken to the general secretary in-charge Manas Ranjan Bhunia this morning asking him for a meeting and perhaps either he will come or I will go to Kolkata and finalise the modalities on how we go about it (preparation for the LS polls).”

He said that the party will also have to agree on certain issues before giving a go ahead as it already has candidates for the upcoming elections.

Commenting on his former party colleague and now BJP leader and former MLA of Mawsynram Himalaya Shangpliang to join the ruling NPP ahead of the LS polls, Pyngrope said, “He (Shangpliang) is free to go to any political party that he desires. There is no constitutional barrier that can stop him from doing so. Therefore, if he feels that he wants to go and join the NPP then it is his prerogative.

The NPP will have to fight the parliamentary seats so if they are looking at Himalaya to be the candidate I find there is nothing wrong in that.”
