Shillong, July 4: Farmers from South West Garo Hills shipped 10 metric tons of locally produced black pepper to Mumbai from Chapahati Prime Hub, under the initiative of Kerupara and Dingampara Integrated Village Cooperative Societies.
With support from the Meghalaya Basin Development Authority under M-LAMP, the societies collected the produce from farmers in Zikzak block and dispatched it to Sundardas Ratansey Spice Pvt Ltd, Mumbai.
Out of the 10 tons, 6,600 kg was collected by Kerupara IVCS at Rupees 640 per kg, while 3,400 kg from Dingampara IVCS fetched Rupees 610 per kg due to quality differences.
This is the second such shipment from the district. The first took place in 2023.
The successful shipment was enabled by coordinated efforts from the Deputy Commissioner, the Am'beng Farmers and Producers Association, and the MBMA Marketing Executive.
MBMA officials confirmed that the pepper will be used by leading spice brands Everest Masala and Everest Food Products.
